As a human rights lawyer with more than three decades of experience in this field, I know well that the concept of genocide has often been subject to political abuse. But the current mass slaughter of the Palestinian people, rooted in an ethno-nationalist settler-colonial ideology, is a continuation of decades of systematic persecution and cleansing, based entirely on their status as Arabs, and coupled with explicit statements about the intentions of world leaders. Israeli government and army, leaving no room for doubt or controversy. In Gaza, civilian homes, schools, churches, mosques and medical institutions are being attacked indiscriminately, and thousands of civilians are being slaughtered. In the West Bank, including occupied Jerusalem, homes are seized and reallocated entirely on the basis of ethnicity, and violent massacres by settlers are accompanied by Israeli military units. Throughout the land, apartheid rules.
This is a textual case of genocide. The ethno-nationalist European settler-colonial project in Palestine has entered its final phase, towards the rapid destruction of the last remnants of indigenous Palestinian life in Palestine. What’s more, the governments of the United States, the United Kingdom, and much of Europe are fully complicit in this horrific attack. Not only do these governments refuse to fulfill their treaty obligations to “ensure respect” for the Geneva Conventions, but in fact they are actively arming the attack, providing economic and intelligence support, and providing political and diplomatic cover for the atrocities committed by Israel.Atrocities
